Things to do in Le Marche
Le Marche offers a wealth of activities for those
of you who would like to get out and about. Most of these activities and sights are available throughout the year making Le Marche an attractive holiday option year round.
There are local markets on every day of the week which sell everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, to shoes and table linen. They are
also a fantastic insight into local life and a good opportunity for people watching! The market in Force is on a Friday. There is also a fantastic antiques market in the main piazza in Fermo in the summer.
The caves at Genga are an amazing sight, and are also a good option for a cool down! There are daily tours which lead you through a series of caves with small lakes and finally the Abisso Ancona - a cave 240metres in height.
The Italian beaches are fantastically clean and
well managed with many of them having earnt flags for cleanliness. The beaches at Porto San Giorgio and San Benedetto are probably among the nicest
with long sandy white beaches, good facilities and fantastic fish restaurants! Both of these beaches
are an easy drive from the house.
Local Festas and The Quintana
There are local festivals nearly every week during
the Summer, celebrating everything from polenta to mussels. There are also a great window into local life! The Quintana is a fantastic medieval jousting festival in Ascoli Piceno in the main square on the first Sunday in August. The celebration concludes with
an enormous procession of towns people dressed
in 15th Century costume. Not to be missed!
There is an opera festival every Summer at Macerata's open air ampitheatre.
Horseriding is also available for those more adventurous types at Le Querce in Sarnano
- which is a fantastic way to enjoy the countryside.
1 to 4 hour solo or accompanied treks are available. Alternatively, group treks or private lessons can be arranged at a centre near beautiful Lago San Ruffino (San Ruffino Lake) near Amandola - tel 0736 847053.
The golf course at Conero offers a championship standard 18 hole course for the keen golfer, as well as a 9 hole course more suited to beginners.
Skiing is available during the winter months at Sassotetto near to Sarnano. Ski lessons from
English speaking instructors are also available at
the ski schools. The ski resort has 10 drag/chairlifts,
9 pistes plus off piste action available. At this Marche ski resort there are a couple of restaurants, ski, snowbaord & boot hire plus ski pass sales. There is
a regular bus service from Sarnano to Sassotetto
so you can combine your ski holiday in Italy with sightseeing and culture
Bike hire is available from the town of Amandola, complete with bike racks for your hire car so you
can enjoy a cycle trip around the National Park.
The National Park offers some fantastic scenery, with different walking trails waymarked, some of which are highlighted as family friendly. Lake Fiastra in the park is very beautiful and is used for swimming and kayaking in the Summer months.
The restaurants in Le Marche are mostly very simple. They normally offer pizza, pasta, and grilled meats
as well as some fantastic and very drinkable wines. All of the restaurants are family friendly and very well priced. A full restaurant guide of our favourites is at the house. There is a fantastic restaurant in Force (about 4 minutes drive) as well as many more locally.
There are numerous hilltop villages in Le Marche, all with their own charm and worth a wander. Many also have their own museum with local history information. Ascoli Piceno, the capital of the region, is only 25 minutes drive from the house, and offers reputably the most beautiful piazza in Italy. For trips further afield Assisi and San Marino are well worth the visit.
